Italy is Open to Discover Its Treasures
The pandemic has kept many of us from traveling to the places we love, and one of the things I missed over this time was the joy of hitting the road in Italy to travel from town to town to discover its treasures. Visiting these smaller communities gives a true picture of the social and cultural fabric of Italy.
Our “Other Italy” journey started north in Riva del Garda and ended in Sicily. The charming resort town of Riva del Garda located at the top of Lake Garda is a playground for boaters and land lovers. Turning further north we journeyed into the Alps, this UNESCO designation area was once part of Austria before the First World War and the towns of Bolzano and Merano are worth a visit. Next, south to Sirmione, on the southern bank of Lake Garda. It wasn’t beautiful enough back in medieval times, they had to build a sturdy, but gorgeous castle! A quick stop in Modena for a balsamic vinegar producer tour, then on to the region of Le Marche.
Le Marche is breathtaking and famous for outstanding seafood and the famous Ascolana olives (stuffed fried olives) in Ascoli Piceno. What more can you ask for? Beaches, caves, Medieval towns, culture, and it’s the birthplace (Jesi) of Fredrick II, one of my most favorite characters from Italy’s past.
Next stop, the unspoiled Gargano area of Puglia, covered with forest and outlined by dreamy dramatic coastlines of white limestone cliffs. Vieste, Peschici, Vico del Gargano and Monte Sant’Angelo, all great places to get off the beaten track.
Southbound, we visited Matera, a must-see UNESCO town known for its Sassi (cave dwellings). It is certainly off the beaten path; however, you won’t be disappointed! Sicily is a story all to itself.
See you in Italy!
